I have it working again, but only if I deselect 'total row' in the ribbon and then reselect it for each variable in my Category column that I wish to subtotal. Before this problem, I only needed to select 'total row' in the ribbon and automatically it would total debit and credit columns for each Category.

Maybe somehow this table got split or somehow became a range instead of a table.

Turn off all the filters. Look for a blank row. A blank row signifies the end of the table. Delete any blank rows.

On the Tables tab of the Ribbon click Convert to Range to make sure the table is no longer an Excel Table. If you do not see the Tables tab of the Ribbon when you select any cell in the table, you know that somehow this is now a range object and not a table object.

Then, on the Insert tab of the Ribbon choose Tables > Table and make sure the My Table Has Headers checkbox is checked.
