Many Spanish teaching apps on the market primarily teach learners the pronunciation of words, rather than the pronunciation rules of how letters are arranged with other letters. For example, Duolingo, the most downloaded learning app on Google Play directly provides learners with the pronunciation of words, instead of teaching the basic pronunciation of letters and the pronunciation rules for combining different letters. This learning approach makes it difficult to deduce the pronunciation of unknown words.
Incorrect pronunciation may have a negative impact on the learners, such as poor language learning, loss of confidence, inefficiency in communication, or jeopardy of professional ability. In order to help the learners improve their pronunciation, this study will design a chatbot that uses Python to provide pronunciation teaching for each letter and pronunciation rules on the Line instant messaging platform. The Learners can practice pronunciation with the chatbot, which also scores their pronunciation to help them improve their skills.
The results showed that after two weeks, the experimental group using the chatbot had better pronunciation skills compared to the control group that did not use it. Moreover, the learners were satisfied with the convenience of the chatbot and felt interested in the scoring function.
